Getting started with grounding

New to grounding? Start here with simple answers about what it is, how grounding products are used and what to expect.

What is grounding?

Grounding, also called earthing, is the practice of making contact with the Earth’s surface. This can be done naturally by walking barefoot on grass or sand, or indoors using a conductive grounding product connected to a suitable grounding point.

How does grounding work?

Grounding products use conductive materials to create a connection between your body and a suitable grounding point. They connect to the earth connection of a properly grounded socket and do not draw electrical power from the socket.

Does grounding really work?

Research into grounding is still developing. Some early studies have reported interesting findings, but the overall body of evidence remains limited and more high-quality independent research is needed. Individual experiences vary, so grounding is best viewed as a personal wellbeing practice rather than a medical treatment.

How long does grounding take to work?

There is no guaranteed timeframe because individual experiences vary. Some people choose to make grounding a regular part of their daily routine, while others may notice little or no difference. The simplest approach is to use it consistently and decide whether it is a worthwhile addition to your routine.

Sleep, Stress & Recovery

Many people include grounding in their evening, relaxation or recovery routines. Individual experiences vary, and research into specific health effects is still developing.

Can grounding help with sleep?

Some people choose to include grounding in their bedtime routine and report positive personal experiences. However, research is still developing and grounding is not a proven treatment for sleep problems. Individual experiences vary.

Can grounding help me feel calmer?

Some people use grounding as part of a broader relaxation routine, alongside activities such as reading, meditation or stretching. Individual experiences vary, so it is best viewed as a personal wellbeing practice rather than a treatment for stress or anxiety.

Why do people use grounding before bed?

Grounding products can be easily incorporated into an existing evening routine. Some people use a mat while reading or relaxing, while others use a sleep mat or mattress cover overnight. The appeal is that it can become part of a normal routine without requiring additional time or effort.

Using Grounding Products

Grounding products are designed to make indoor grounding simple. Here is how to connect and use them correctly.

How do I use a grounding mat?

Connect the supplied cord to the mat, then connect it to a suitable grounding point using the appropriate plug or adapter. Place your bare feet, hands or another area of skin on the conductive surface while working or relaxing. Always follow the instructions supplied with your product.

Do I need bare skin contact?

Direct skin contact generally provides the most reliable conductive connection with the surface. Depending on the product, this might mean placing your bare feet, hands, arms or legs directly on it.

Can I use grounding through clothing?

Conductivity through clothing can vary depending on the fabric, thickness and moisture level. For the most reliable contact with a grounding mat or similar product, direct skin contact is recommended.

Do grounding mats use electricity?

No. Grounding mats do not draw electrical power from the socket. They connect only to the earth or grounding connection of a suitable socket. The electricity does not need to be switched on for the grounding connection to be used.

Sheets, Mats & Daily Use

Different grounding products suit different routines, from daytime use at a desk or on the sofa to longer periods of use while relaxing or sleeping.

Can I sleep on a grounding mat all night?

Some grounding products are designed for extended or overnight use. For sleeping, a grounding sleep mat, sheet or mattress cover is usually the most comfortable option. Always use the product according to its instructions and ensure it is connected to a suitable grounding point.

What’s the difference between a grounding mat and sheet?

Grounding mats usually have a firmer conductive surface and are designed for use under the feet, hands or other areas of the body while working or relaxing. Grounding sheets and mattress covers are larger and designed to fit more naturally into a sleep environment. Both use conductive materials and connect to a suitable grounding point.

How often should I use grounding products?

There is no required schedule. Some people use grounding products occasionally, while others make them part of a regular daily or evening routine. Choose a frequency that fits comfortably into your lifestyle and always follow the instructions supplied with your product.

Safety & Common Concerns

Grounding products should be used correctly and connected only to a suitable grounding point. Here are answers to some of the most common safety questions.

Is grounding safe?

Grounding products are generally intended for everyday use when they are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions and connected to a suitable grounding point. They do not draw electrical power from the socket. If you are unsure whether your socket is correctly grounded, use an appropriate socket tester or consult a qualified electrician before use.

Can children use grounding products?

If you are considering a grounding product for a child, check the product instructions and ensure it is suitable for their age and intended use. Children should use products under appropriate adult supervision. If the child has a health condition or uses an implanted electrical device, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before use.

Can grounding be used with medical conditions?

Grounding products are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition. If you have a health condition, are receiving medical treatment, take medication that requires monitoring, or use an implanted electrical device, speak with a qualified healthcare professional before using a grounding product.

What if I notice a sensation while using a grounding product?

People sometimes describe sensations such as warmth, tingling or simply greater awareness of contact with the surface, while many people notice no sensation at all. Experiences vary, and a sensation is not evidence that the product is producing a health effect. If you experience discomfort or anything that concerns you, stop using the product and check that it is set up correctly before continuing.

Shipping, Returns & Care

Everything you need to know about caring for your product, delivery, returns and checking your grounding setup.

How do I clean a grounding mat?

Disconnect the mat before cleaning. Wipe the surface gently with a soft, damp cloth and allow it to air dry completely before reconnecting. Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, oils or abrasive cleaners, as these may damage the conductive surface. Always follow the care instructions supplied with your specific product.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are dispatched from the UK. Delivery times vary depending on your location and the shipping service selected at checkout. UK orders typically arrive within 2-3 days while international delivery may take longer. Tracking details will be provided when your order is dispatched.

What is your return policy?

We offer a 60-day returns policy, giving you time to try your product at home. If you decide it is not right for you, contact us within 60 days of receiving your order to arrange a return. Please see our Returns & Refunds Policy for full terms, conditions and any exclusions.

How do I know if my product is working?

Grounding does not necessarily create a noticeable physical sensation, so how you feel is not a reliable way to check the setup. The best way to confirm the connection is to check that your socket is correctly grounded and that the product and cord are connected according to the instructions.

Use an appropriate socket tester if you are unsure about your outlet. Some products can also be checked with a suitable continuity or conductivity tester. If you are unsure, contact us and we can help you check your setup.
